The 42cast Episode 133: Get to Know the Cast

November 23, 2021 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Coat of ArmsWe’ve been podcasting for almost five years, but you’ve only had the opportunity to learn about a small fraction of our cast. We decided now is the time to rectify that situation. In this episode we sit down with three of our most prolific castmates. We ask each other geeky questions and give you some insight into our characters. It’s the same format as episode one, but it’s so much fun that we’ll probably do it again.

Due to a lack of material, there is no five-minute controversy this week.

This week Stephanie, James, and Mike join the cast.

We also discuss the plots, new characters, directorial choices, and more.

Since this the second part of a single podcast recording there is no five-minute controversy this week.

The 42cast Episode 131: Warping the Box Office Part One

November 9, 2021 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Trek Films Part OneIn 1977, Star Wars was released to movie theaters worldwide and created a smash hit phenomenon. Seeing the fervor for media content and merchandise many other sci-fi properties tried to horn in on the action. Star Trek had had a loyal fanbase since the 60’s and even had a new television series in the works, but with Star Wars blowing up the theaters it made sense that Star Trek could follow suit and also win big at the box office. The TV project, Star Trek: Phase II was shut down and Star Trek: The Motion Picture came to the big screen in 1979. The series of six movies that it spawned led to a revitalization of interest in Star Trek as well as a continuation for the actors who played the iconic roles. In this episode we have the first half of our discussion of the movies in which we talk about Star Treks I – III. We discuss how the big screen changed Trek, the themes of the different movies, whether the evens vs odds rule really works.

Our five-minute controversy this week asks if it would be a smart move for Disney to quit publishing Marvel comics and license to another publisher.

This week Stephanie is cohost and Ryan and Eric join the cast.

Along the way we also talk about the awesomeness of Grudge and whether or not the queen herself has any secrets to share. The 42cast Episode 128: Gone but not Forgotten

October 15, 2021 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Gone but not ForgottenWe’ve all had the experience. We absolutely love a TV series and follow it faithfully, but then it’s canceled after one or two seasons. In this episode we take a look at all the contenders who got knocked out early in the fight. We air our grievances and talk about why we think these series should have kept going. We also discuss the difficulties in comparing series that lasted such a small amount of time with the behemoths that last for 5 or more seasons. These shows may be gone, but they’re not forgotten.

Our five-minute controversy this week asks if Marvel’s relegating the former Marvel TV properties to non-canon status is a good or bad move.

This week Eric and newcomers, Wil and Karen join the cast.

October 5, 2021 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Shang-ChiOut of the pages of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, Shang-Chi punches his way into the box office. In this episode we talk about how a character mired in the Kung Fu cinema culture of the 70’s got adapted for the 2020’s. We discuss the cast and what we thought of both the characters and performances. We also get into the greater Marvel story and how this film connects and what we think are the missed opportunities. We also discuss other comics elements and how they’re utilized in the movie, whether this is the final nail in the coffin of the Netflix arm of Marvel, and what we want out of a Shang-Chi sequel.

Disclaimer: This episode contains spoilers. If you do not wish to have the movie spoiled for you, please watch the film before listening to this podcast.

Due to time constraints this episode does not have a five-minute controversy.

This week Mark; Kelley; Gerald; and newcomer, J.D., join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 126: Alice in Chains

September 30, 2021 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Batwoman Season TwoMajor changes are afoot as we discuss season two of Batwoman. The CW made a controversial move this year by not only replacing the actress who played Batwoman, but changing the identity of the person who wears the cowl to a person-of-color. We discuss the change and whether or not we think it’s worked. We also talk about the changed storylines and what we think of what’s been done with new and established characters. Along the way, we opine on The Diggle Cinematic Universe, Luke Fox taking his role as a hero, and whether the Crows make an effective substitute for the police as well as what the series isn’t addressing. We also chat about whether the Many Arms of Death is just the League of Assassins with the serial numbers filed off and whether desert rose really makes more sense as the name of a cosmetic product.

In this week’s five-minute controversy we ask if Disney/Marvel made the right call by stating that Stan Lee’s image and voice would never be used in any future projects.

This week Ryan, James, and Cammie join the cast.

We get into the comic origins of the series and talk about how the TV show stacks up. We also talk about what we think are the answers to season 2’s big questions and what we want to see out of a third season.

Instead of a five-minute controversy this week, we discuss the trailer for Godzilla vs Kong.
