The Ultimate Answer to Fandom, Geekyness, and Everything

The 42cast Episode 91: Judgement Day

October 13, 2020 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Discovery Season 2Despite the criticism of the hardcore fanbase, Star Trek: Discovery’s first season was a success. Building on that and attempting to woo more classic fans, Discovery added Pike, Spock, and Number One from the original Star Trek pilot to Discovery season 2. In this episode was talk about the dynamics of Discovery with new captain, Pike in the seat. We also discuss how faithful the portrayals of Pike, Number One, and Spock are to those from the sixty. In addition we discuss the many changes both cosmetic and in the details to the Klingons, Enterprise, Spock’s life story. We also mention the exclusion of the supporting cast, the use of Section 31, and Skynet in the 23rd century, and whether or not the season has a satisfying conclusion. We also discuss our aspirations for season 3.

Due to the availability of some members of the cast there is no five-minute controversy for this week.

This week Stephanie is cohost, and Joe and Anthony join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 63: Solid Gold Trek

December 21, 2019 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Star_Trek_GoldenStar Trek was an idea devised by Gene Roddenberry over fifty years ago. He wanted to tell a hopeful story about the future that not only entertained but showed the potential of humanity. His series was not considered a big success at the time, but it has lived on in reruns and numerous spinoff TV shows and spinoffs since the late 70’s. In this episode we take a look at “Star Trek” as a whole. We discuss Roddenberry’s vision and why it still resonates today. We discuss the topic of what makes something “Star Trek”. We also talk about what we like and on’t like about the franchise.

For this week’s Five-Minute Controversy we ask whether CBS has been too strict on its restrictions with fan films.

This week we introduce Stephanie as cohost for our series of podcasts on Star Trek, and welcome Michael and newcomer, Jay, as guests to the podcast

The 42cast Episode 49: Disco Fever

June 24, 2019 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Star_Trek_Discovery_S1Star Trek: Discovery relaunched the Star Trek franchise on TV after a hiatus of over a decade. Set before the original Star Trek series, Discovery’s slick look and darker tones evoked polarization in fandom as some gravitated towards the update and others rejected what they saw as an affront to Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future. In this episode we talk about those issues as well as the decision to market this on streaming service, CBS All Access instead of on network or cable television. We’ll also discuss the casting, storylines, and themes. We’ll also ask that ephemeral question, “Is this Star Trek”?, before we finally finish up with speculation on the future.

This week’s Five Minute Controversy asks if it’s a good idea for Quentin Tarantino to direct a Star Trek film.

This week Ryan, Michael, James, and Stephanie join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 13: Streams do Come True

August 25, 2017 by Dastari Leave a Comment

StreamsIt seems like you can’t look at the internet anymore without reading a report about some new streaming service starting up. This episode we look into what’s going on with all these services. Can they survive with a single, popular product? Can the consumer base afford to have so many streaming services at a time? What happens to Netflix and Hulu as more and more providers jump ship? How much will piracy effect things? Just what does happen when you cross the streams?

It’s a rollickin’ good ride with guests Ryan and Sam on board to guide us through it. We’re also joined by newcomer Jason halfway through the episode, because he needed to talk about this topic.

Show Notes:
Stargate streaming service
Disney streaming service
