October 21, 2024 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Superman and Lois Season 3Superman and Lois season 4 has already premiered, so we have some catching up to do with our review of season 3! In this action-packed episode we discuss the introduction of Bruno Manheim and Intergang into the narrative. We also talk about the very real plotline around cancer and how Superman faces an enemy that he can’t defeat. We also debate the merits of a tougher, less intellectual Lex Luthor. Along the way we discuss teenagers with powers, family dynamics, dealing with physical illness and it’s effect on mental health, how scary a Superman at the end of his tether can be, and giving people their space.

Give it a listen and let us know what you think!

This week’s Five-Minute Controversy asks if Marc Guggenheim’s comments that the MCU requires a reboot are correct.

This week Ryan, Jess, and Beth join the cast.

November 9, 2022 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Supergirl Season 6Supergirl was a mainstay of DC’s CW offerings for years. Starting as a CBS show, it was moved to the CW with its second season and eventually integrated into the Arrowverse during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event. In this episode we discuss the final season of the series. We talk about the efforts that had to be made to write around star, Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy as well as the Covid-19 pandemic. We also get into the overall plot of the season and whether we felt that this was fitting for a series finale. Finally, we discuss the characters and their interactions and mention what we liked and didn’t about the season. Along the way we also discuss the cameos and who we’re most satisfied seeing and not in this final outing for the series.

This week’s five-minute controversy asks if it’s acceptable to digitally recreate an actor who is still alive.

This week Ryan, James, and Cammie join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 138: Cutting Edge

January 10, 2022 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Superman and Lois Season OneLast year a new series took the Arrowverse by storm. That series was Superman and Lois. Although the character of Superman has been adapted numerous times in numerous media, this series broke the mold by focusing on Superman and Lois as parents of teenage children. Along the way superhuman threats emerge, but the heart of the show is about family. In this episode we talk about that family dynamic, how we felt about the portrayals, the surprise reveal of who “The Stranger” is, and the overall plot of the series. We also discuss that Diggle cameo and our thoughts for season two.

This week’s five-minute controversy has us discuss the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer.

This week Beth, Ryan, Eric, and Thomas join the cast.

Show Notes:
Proof people were linking The Stranger to Lex Luthor prior to the debut of the series.

The 42cast Episode 107: Deus Lex Monitōrem

April 12, 2021 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Supergirl_Season_5Supergirl was the series most effected by Crisis on Infinite Earths in the 2019-2020 season. Kara’s entire world was rewritten to fit it into the Arrowverse, and Lex Luthor had a hand in altering his own status as well. In this episode we discuss the two halves of the season, first discussing Earth-38’s swan song and then discussing the new status quo of the combined Earth Prime. We talk about the character arcs and performances with a strong focus on Lex and Lena Luthor. We also debate the series’ choices with villains and end things with our predictions of where season 6 will go.

In this week’s five-minute controversy we ask if the character of Ralph Dibny should be recast or ignored in the Arrowverse from now on.

This week Ryan; James; and newcomer, Cammie, join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 58: Just Us

November 4, 2019 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Justice_League_MovieJustice League was the culmination of DC’s attempt to create an interconnected movie universe akin to Marvel’s Avengers line. Having introduced Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in the previous films, the movie introduced viewers to The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg as the team banded together to protect all life on Earth from the threat of Steppenwolf. The production suffered some problems. Most notably Zack Snyder had to pull out during the editing phase due to family issues and Joss Whedon took over at the last minute. Making less than the previous, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC considered the movie a failure despite it’s being profitable overall. In this episode we discuss the movie. We talk about what we liked and didn’t like. We discuss the difference of having Whedon involved as a creative talent. We also talk about the makeup of the League and whether or not it was the right lineup. We also discuss whether the movie deserved its critical treatment and whether we would have liked to have seen a sequel.

For this week’s Five-Minute Controversy we discuss whether it’s a good idea for DC to abandon the DCEU idea of a connected movie universe.

This week James; Sam; Gary; and newcomer, Mike, join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 56: Alien Nation

October 14, 2019 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Supergirl_Season_FourFour years and 2 networks into the series, Supergirl seems to have finally found it’s footing. In this episode we discuss difficulties of writing for the eternal optimism of Kara Danvers. We also discuss John Cryer’s surprising turn as Lex Luthor, Brainiac 5’s addition to the cast, and why a little moral ambiguity goes a long way in a series like this.

Instead of a 5-minute controversy, this week we discuss all of the things that we’re looking forward to after Marvel’s SDCC announcements.

This week Ryan, Mike and Michael join the cast.
