Timestreams 4: Warlord Dyoni (The Daleks 5-7)

October 3, 2020 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Daleks_P2It’s back to the planet Skaro as Nathan and Juliette finish the final 3 episodes of The Daleks. Along the way, Juliette can’t let go of Dalek fashion or her Dalek plushie while she talks about why Dyoni will lead the Thals to victory. Native Floridian Nathan is aghast at the idea of wearing sandals in a swamp while more practical Juliette is more concerned about Ian drinking water that releases mist. Juliette discusses Barbara’s love life as Nathan tries to downplay anything but the otp of Barbara and Ian. Meanwhile just what is happening in that final fight scene? The hosts could really use some help figuring it out.

Show Notes
Proof that the Daleks hoard toilet paper.

Serial Title: The Daleks
Alternate Title: The Mutants (As the BBC didn’t assign titles to the serials until the 1970’s, some fans have other titles for the storylines that they consider “more accurate”. After the first three seasons no more of these alternate titles occur. This one is especially confusing, because there is another serial entitled “The Mutants” later in the series.)
Alternate Alternate Title: The Expedition (Only ever applies to episodes 5-7)

Episode Five: The Expedition (Air Date: January 18, 1964)
Episode Six: The Ordeal (Air Date: January 25, 1964)
Episode Seven: The Rescue (Air Date: February 1, 1964)

DVD Extras:
Creation of the Daleks – Discusses how the Dalek concept was devised and how the prop was created.

Next episode of Timestereams: We’ll cover the serial, The Edge of Destruction (Inside the Spaceship)(Beyond the Sun).

Timestreams 3: Welcome to the Jungle (The Daleks 1-4)

August 15, 2020 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Daleks_P1It’s a special Covid-19 episode as Nathan and Juliette discover the perpetrators behind the toilet paper and food hording and find that it’s none other than the Doctor’s oldest returning foes, The Daleks. Take a trip to the planet Skaro as they discuss the behind-the-scenes origins of the crazy creatures. Along the way they discuss the Doctor’s profound selfishness and the changing relationships of the crew. Nathan defends Susan against the fan narrative. Juliette points out that the Thals can’t be that pacifistic when Dyoni is ready to cut any woman that looks at Alydon. They both discuss the obliviousness of the crew who don’t notice a flashing Geiger Counter, and then they have the first segment of Juliette’s costume corner as they discuss the horror of Thal fashion.

Timestreams 2: Fire Rules! (An Unearthly Child 2-4)

June 19, 2020 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Tribe_of_GumNathan and Juliette venture into the second through fourth episodes of the first serial of Doctor Who, just in time to watch Susan channel her inner Beevis as we wrap up An Unearthly Child. Along the way we’ll discuss feats of strength with styrofoam, whether these titles were written for the Hardy Boys (or Nancy Drew!), and whether or not Barbara or Susan have ever seen roadkill. We’ll also see Za and Kal avoid going Amok and discuss the merits of gasoline when making a fire. Juliette will also assert her superior survival skills and thus make her the leader of our tribe, which will explain just why fire rules. By the end we’re a little older and a little wiser and Juliette has some Opinions™.

Timestreams 1: Dual Pilot Action (An Unearthly Child)

May 30, 2020 by Dastari Leave a Comment

An_Unearthly_ChildNathan and Juliette take their first foray into the world of Doctor Who. First up is an introductory episode where Nathan and Juliette introduce themselves. Then they review both the unaired and aired pilots of the series. Along the way they discuss the challenges of filming, whether there’s more chemistry than just what’s in the classroom between Ian and Barbara, issues with looking straight at the camera, what makes something ‘alive’, and whether the Doctor is just a violent kidnapper. Nathan brings up a lot of behind-the-scenes info and before it ends they’re interrupted by a very special cat. Please note: this recording was plagued by sound issues that we were only partially able to fix in editing. However, we didn’t want to re-record because we wanted our reactions to the discussion to be genuine. The sound issues have been addressed for future episodes.

The 42cast Episode 25: Chicago TARDIS 2017 – Big Finish’s First Doctor Adventures

January 22, 2018 by Dastari Leave a Comment

First_Doctor_AdventuresThis month, Big Finish is opening the door on a brand new set of adventures featuring the first Doctor and his companions as you’ve never seen them before. Fresh from Twice Upon a Time, David Bradley has stepped back into the role of the first incarnation of everyone’s famous Time Lord, but this time he’s joined by his costars from An Adventure in Space and Time to play Ian, Barbara, and Susan. We had the pleasure of being able to sit with Nick Briggs, co-producer at Big Finish and director of this series to give us some information about this series as well as discussing recasting and “authenticity” in general with us.

This week Nick Briggs and a mystery guest join the cast.
