The 42cast Episode 103: Home Invasion

March 17, 2021 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Spider-Man Far From HomeSpider-Man is the latest film to come from the MCU. Giving us our first glimpse of the post-Endgame landscape, the movie teased the multiverse and a new hero, but was any of it what it seemed? In this episode we dive into Far From Home. We talk about Peter and his supporting cast. We discuss Iron Man’s legacy and how Peter factors into it. We’ll also dive into Mysterio, comparing him to his comic counterpart and talk about why his story matters to the MCU. We round it out by talking about the appearance of several familiar faces and what that may mean for the MCU moving forward.

In this week’s five-minute controversy we discuss whether Lou Ferrigno’s comments that he can’t take Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk seriously have merit or not.

This week Ryan, Joe, and Anji join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 92: We’re in the Endgame Now

October 19, 2020 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Avengers FourIn 2008 Marvel released the movie, Iron Man, and the world would never be the same again. Now with their 22nd film, Marvel brings many of the story threads that they’ve been building for eleven years to a conclusion while leaving the door open for so many more stories. In this episode, we talk about Avengers: Endgame. We talk about the characters, discuss the plot, ponder time travel and parallel worlds, and opine on just where the MCU will go from here. Along the way, we discuss epic battles, characters we were delighted to see again, endpoints, the MVP that no one noticed, and the significance of a finger.

We knew this one would run long, so there is no five-minute controversy this episode.

This week Will, Ashley, Ryan, and Mark join the cast.

Luke_Cage_Season_2Luke Cage was one of the big hits for the initial run of Marvel’s Defenders line of TV shows. Featuring topical storylines and a fantastic soundtrack, Cage resonated with many viewers. In this episode we discuss Cage’s second outting and whether or not it held up to the hype. Along the way we’ll talk about new characters such as Tilda and Bushmaster. We’ll also talk about all the returning cast and how we feel that their stories have evolved since season 1 and how we like it. We’ll also discuss what we like about the show and if season 2 delivered. Finally, we’ll discuss what we would have wanted for season 3 if we’d gotten one.

The five-minute controversy this week asks if the Russos were right to cut Howard the Duck from Avengers: Infinity War.

This week Anji, Mike, and Jennifer join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 66: Wakanda Forever

January 21, 2020 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Black_Panther_Movie_PosterThe Black Panther was a character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby back in the 1960’s. Portraying him as the ruler of a technologically superior African nation, Lee and Kirby showed just how visionary they could be in a time when the idea of a black superhero was controversial. Knowing the history behind the character and the potential for this movie, Marvel took it’s time introducing the character to ensure that it gave him a movie of the quality that he deserved. In this episode of The 42cast we delve into Black Panther and talk about whether it succeeded in its goal and what we thought of the storytelling, characters, and it’s place within the greater MCU.

In the interests of time, we did not record a five-minute controversy for this episode.

This week Jen; Anji; Ryan; and newcomer, Lucas join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 65: Danger, Will Robinson

January 8, 2020 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Lost in SpaceThe original Lost in Space was a contemporary series of Star Trek, but it never got the same kind of following as the other sci-fi series. The storylines tended to be far more immature and the special effects left a lot to be desired. Yet, in 2018 Netflix decided to reboot the series. Taking the basic idea of the original series, they modernized it’s tale of the Robinson family, lost far away from the colony that they wish to travel to, finding ways to be true to the original series while garnishing it with our modern sensibilities. In this episode we discuss the new series, what we think of how it’s modified the original Lost in Space concept, how we feel about the characters, and what we think future plotlines hold.

Our five-minute controversy asks whether we’re upset about Marvel pulling their content from Netflix and whether we think that they’re continue the various series on Disney+.

This week Mike, Eric, and Joe join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 61: Trial Run

December 4, 2019 by Dastari 1 Comment

Runaways_S2As Runaways season 3 rushes at us, we’re taking a look back to our discussion of season 2. Runaways was a surprise property for Marvel TV, taking a relatively new comic and placing it on Hulu during a time when Marvel was mostly putting TV content on Netflix. The first season achieved both critical and fan acclaim, garnering a renewal on Hulu was an increased episode count. In this episode we examine the 13 episode second season, discuss the plotlines, talk about the characters, and speculate on what we’ll see in season 3.

For this week’s Five-Minute Controversy we discuss whether it was a good decision on Marvel’s part to retcon Loki as having been mind-controlled during the original Avengers film.

This week Beth and Mike join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 53: For We Are Many

September 26, 2019 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Legion_Season_2Legion is a mind-trippy story about the most powerful mutant on Earth, who also suffers from severe mental illness. In this episode we stare into the abyss of season 2 and try to keep it from staring back into us. Along the way we come to conclusions, all of which are probably inaccurate. Still, we have a fun time. Along the way we talk about Gary’s teeth sweating, Anji reveals the true villain of the series, and Mike gives us the 411 on the “boyfriend test”. We think it’s worth a listen and you should let us know if you agree once you listen.

This week’s 5-minute controversy asks if we want to see Henry Cavill continue as Superman, but if he doesn’t who should succeed him.

This week Anji, Mike, and Gary join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 52: A.K.A. Booze and Bad Attitude

September 8, 2019 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Jessica-Jones-S2Last year, before the wave of cancellations of Marvel Netflix series there was hope that we’d be getting these for a long time to come. This week, The 42cast pulls an episode from the archives from those halcyon days where we discuss Jessica Jones season 2. This season was controversial as many said that it lost some of what made the first season great. We address those comments as well as discussing the long reach of Kilgrave, substance abuse, mother-daughter issues, and whether or not anyone wants your cray-cray.

Due to the number of guests there is no 5-minute controversy this week.

This week Ryan, Anji, Mark and Stephanie join the cast.

The 42cast Episode 50: Smells Like Teen Spirit

July 29, 2019 by Dastari Leave a Comment

Cloak_and_Dagger_S1Come celebrate 50 episodes of The 42cast. Unlike other podcasts we’re not doing anything special. We’re just bringing you the same great reviews that you’ve come to expect from The 42cast. This time we discuss season one of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger. The series is a bit of a looser adaptation than many other Marvel properties and skews far younger in the demographics. This week we discuss the series, how it works as an adaptation, and how well it works in its own right. We’ll also discuss stylistic choices, how it stacks against the CW and Marvel’s Runaways, and make much ado about their musical choices.

This week’s Five Minute Controversy asks if we should listen to aggregate review sites such as Rotten Tomatoes.

This week Ryan and Mike join the cast.

Show Notes:
Mike’s Nelson’s much improved ending to Cloak and Dagger Season One
